BWI Marshall Airport Breaks Ground on New Air Cargo Facility

Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport broke ground this week on a new air cargo facility, a $65 million investment aimed at accommodating rising e-commerce shipping volume that has increasingly flowed through the airport's cargo operations in recent years.

The new 220,000-square-foot facility will roughly double BWI's existing cargo handling capacity, airport officials said, addressing bottlenecks that have emerged as several major shipping carriers have expanded operations at the airport to serve the growing Baltimore-Washington e-commerce distribution market.

"Cargo volume through this airport has grown faster than our physical infrastructure for handling it, and that's created real operational strain during peak shipping periods," said the Maryland Aviation Administration's chief of cargo operations. "This facility is designed to get ahead of that demand rather than continuing to play catch-up."

The project is funded through a combination of airport revenue bonds and a federal infrastructure grant, with construction expected to take approximately 20 months. Airport officials said the expanded facility is expected to support several hundred new jobs in cargo handling, sorting, and logistics coordination once fully operational.

BWI's cargo growth reflects a broader regional trend of e-commerce distribution facilities concentrating around the Baltimore-Washington corridor, drawn by the area's dense population and proximity to major highway corridors. Airport officials said they expect cargo volume to continue growing even after the new facility opens, and are already evaluating sites for potential further expansion within the next decade.
