Cape Cod Tourism Revenue Reaches New High as Shoulder Season Business Rebounds

Tourism revenue across Cape Cod reached a new high last year, according to regional tourism officials, driven largely by a rebound in shoulder-season and small conference travel business that had lagged well behind peak-summer leisure travel recovery in the years immediately following the pandemic.

The Cape's hospitality industry, long dependent on a concentrated summer season running from Memorial Day to Labor Day, has increasingly positioned itself as a viable option for fall and spring conferences and retreats, a pitch that tourism officials say has become more persuasive as hotels have invested in year-round amenities and meeting space.

"Meeting planners are increasingly looking for something different from a downtown hotel, and we can offer a genuinely distinctive setting at a lower cost than what you'd pay at a big-city convention hotel," said a Cape Cod regional tourism official. "That's become a real selling point for us over the last few years."

Hotel occupancy data for the Cape showed particularly strong growth in September and October bookings, historically among the slowest months for an area whose business model has centered on summer beach tourism. Regional officials credited targeted marketing to association and corporate meeting planners for the shift, along with continued investment in hotel meeting facilities.

Cape Cod tourism officials said they expect shoulder-season revenue to continue growing as additional hotels invest in expanded meeting space capacity over the next several years, helping smooth out a hospitality economy that has historically been heavily concentrated in just a few summer months.
