MIT Reports Record Engineering Enrollment for Third Straight Year

MIT's School of Engineering enrolled its largest incoming class on record this fall, admissions officials announced, marking the third consecutive year of enrollment growth in programs that have become increasingly selective as demand for robotics, AI, and computing talent surges nationally.

University administrators attributed the sustained interest to MIT's continued dominance in national engineering rankings, along with expanding programs in robotics and computational biology that have drawn record numbers of applicants from across the country and overseas.

"Students are choosing Cambridge because the outcomes data has become impossible to ignore, and because the research opportunities here for undergraduates are genuinely unusual," said the school's dean of undergraduate education. "That's always been true to some degree, but the gap has widened."

The larger cohort has put pressure on lab and housing capacity, and university officials confirmed several departments have added additional lab sections while a new engineering complex, currently under construction near Kendall Square, is completed. The university said the new building, expected to open within two years, will add significant lab and classroom capacity specifically for robotics and computational research.

Massachusetts higher education officials pointed to the enrollment growth as a sign of continued confidence in the state's flagship technical institutions. University leaders said they do not expect to grow the incoming class further until the new complex opens.
