Salem Wellness Center Reopens Historic Building After Restoration

A longtime holistic wellness center in downtown Salem has reopened after a multi-year restoration of its historic 19th-century building, a project that preserved the structure's original architectural details while modernizing its treatment spaces.

The center, which offers acupuncture, massage therapy, and herbal consultation services, had operated from the same building for over two decades before undertaking the restoration, which addressed structural issues while carefully preserving period woodwork and windows that give the space much of its character.

"We could have moved into a newer, more generic building years ago, but our clients specifically tell us that the history of this space is part of the experience," said the wellness center's owner. "Restoring it rather than replacing it took much longer and cost more, but it kept something that mattered to the people who come here."

The restoration included updated electrical and plumbing systems hidden behind carefully preserved original walls, along with accessibility improvements required to meet current building codes. The center's owner said several loyal clients continued booking mobile in-home appointments during the years the building was under restoration, helping sustain the business through the construction period.

Salem's historic downtown has drawn increasing tourism in recent years beyond its traditional fall season, and local business officials said the wellness center's restoration reflects a broader pattern of downtown property owners investing in preserving the city's 19th-century architecture rather than replacing it.
