Several spas in the Salisbury area have introduced weekend getaway packages this year aimed at attracting visitors from Baltimore and Washington seeking a lower-key wellness retreat alternative to more established coastal destinations closer to Ocean City.

The packages typically bundle overnight accommodations at partner inns with a full spa treatment menu, positioning the Eastern Shore's quieter rural setting as a selling point for visitors seeking a more relaxed atmosphere than busier beach town spa experiences during peak summer tourist season.

"We're never going to compete with Ocean City on nightlife or boardwalk attractions, and we've stopped trying to," said the owner of a Salisbury-area spa that partnered with a nearby bed-and-breakfast on a new weekend package. "What we can offer is genuine quiet and a slower pace, and it turns out there's real demand for that from people who are exhausted by how busy the more popular coastal towns have gotten."

The packages have found a particular audience among visitors from the Baltimore and Washington metro areas looking for a shorter drive than more distant wellness retreat destinations, while still offering a meaningful change of scenery from urban and suburban daily life. Spa owners said early bookings have skewed toward couples and small groups of friends rather than solo travelers.

Regional tourism officials have expressed interest in supporting the wellness tourism packages as part of broader efforts to diversify Eastern Shore tourism beyond its traditional reliance on Ocean City's summer beach season. Spa owners said they plan to expand package offerings into the shoulder season months if demand continues to build.
