UMass Memorial Health Expands Inpatient Mental Health Beds Amid Worcester County Shortage
UMass Memorial Health is adding 22 new inpatient behavioral health beds to address a shortage across Worcester County.
UMass Memorial Health is adding 22 new inpatient behavioral health beds at its Worcester campus, a response to a persistent shortage of psychiatric inpatient capacity across central Massachusetts that has left emergency departments regularly boarding mental health patients for days awaiting a bed.
The expansion will convert underused administrative space into a dedicated psychiatric unit with private rooms, a supervised group therapy space, and a secure outdoor courtyard, features hospital officials said are standard in newer behavioral health facilities but were absent from the region's existing psychiatric bed stock.
"We've had patients sitting in our emergency department for three, four, sometimes five days waiting for a psychiatric bed to open up somewhere in the region," said UMass Memorial's chief medical officer for behavioral health. "That's not appropriate care for someone in a mental health crisis, and it's been a problem for a long time."
Worcester County has faced a documented shortage of inpatient psychiatric beds for over a decade, with county health officials estimating current capacity meets only a fraction of demonstrated need. The new unit is expected to begin admitting patients within the next several months following final state licensing approval.
UMass Memorial said the expansion was funded partly through a state grant targeting behavioral health infrastructure, part of a broader Massachusetts effort to add psychiatric bed capacity statewide after years of hospitals converting such beds to other uses due to lower reimbursement rates.
