Amherst College's Science Programs Earn Renewed Top Accreditation

Amherst College's science departments have earned a ten-year renewal of accreditation, a distinction held by only a portion of undergraduate science programs nationwide, following a review process that took more than a year to complete.

The accreditation review examined the college's curriculum, faculty research output, and post-graduation outcomes, with reviewers specifically praising Amherst's undergraduate research practicum, which places student teams directly in faculty labs for a full year of supervised research work beginning as early as sophomore year.

"Getting re-accredited isn't just a formality — it forces you to prove that what you're teaching still matches what employers and graduate programs actually need," said the dean of the faculty. "The research practicum program was one of the things reviewers kept coming back to because it's not just classroom coursework."

The college has steadily grown its science research funding over the past several years, adding new lab space specifically for neuroscience and computational biology research that has become increasingly popular among undergraduates. School officials said research funding has grown by roughly 25 percent since the college expanded its science facilities five years ago.

College leadership said the renewed accreditation strengthens Amherst's standing as it competes for top science students against larger research universities, many of which offer more extensive facilities but less individualized faculty mentorship at the undergraduate level.
