Eastern Shore Poultry Exporters Navigate Shifting International Trade Rules
Maryland's Eastern Shore poultry industry is adjusting export strategies as shifting international trade rules affect key overseas markets.
Maryland's Eastern Shore poultry industry, one of the region's largest agricultural export sectors, is adjusting its overseas sales strategy as shifting international trade rules affect access to several key export markets that have historically purchased significant volumes of Delmarva-raised chicken.
Industry representatives said several processing companies operating on the Eastern Shore have diversified their export customer base over the past few years in response to periodic trade disputes and changing tariff arrangements, reducing reliance on any single overseas market that could be disrupted by a future trade policy shift.
"Ten years ago, a handful of countries bought the overwhelming majority of our export volume, and when trade relations with any one of them got complicated, the whole industry felt it immediately," said an economist with a regional poultry industry trade group. "Companies have gotten a lot more deliberate about spreading that risk across more markets since then."
The poultry industry remains one of the largest agricultural employers on Maryland's Eastern Shore, supporting processing plants, contract growers, and a substantial trucking and logistics network built around moving live birds and processed product. Industry representatives said export markets remain an important outlet for chicken parts that have limited demand in the domestic market but sell well overseas, making export access a persistent priority for the industry's profitability.
State agriculture officials said they continue working with federal trade representatives to maintain and expand market access for Maryland poultry exporters, describing the industry as economically significant enough to warrant sustained attention despite representing a relatively small share of the state's overall economy.
